                Man Appalachian Regional Hospital
                aka Man Community Hospital

                Man, West Virginia

Many have already heard many stories about this place. Few manage to hear or see things within its walls. However, many eyewitnesses have witnessed more than they could ever imagine inside.

Constructed in 1954 by its owners of Appalachian Regional Healthcare, it stood as the communities most used hospital. In early 1990's, an extension was added to the hospital for ambulances and more room to treat its patients. Many patients came and went. Many though, passed on inside the hospital. The hospital contained a good faculty and remained a family friendly environment, meeting many medical needs. Though the nursery and/or maternity ward was removed from this hospital, it was still one of southern West Virginia’s most used hospitals.

In early 2000, ARH announced the closure of the hospital due to funds. The community though, kept the hospital running. Even when ARH was working on closing down the building, many fought to keep it open. Many even went to court in hopes of having the hospital longer and to keep it from shutting down. Sadly, they were turned down and the hospital was closed in 2001.

Before the hospital even closed, many reported seeing odd things inside the hospital. From strange voices to strange images. Some even heard sounds of people walking around upstairs when no one was there to blame. Few claimed of random blackout's in parts of the building that couldn't be explained. They claimed it was as if a breaker was thrown. Also, there were power surges in most parts as some also claimed to have witnessed. Some of the nurses claimed they heard footsteps in the stairs or a cold chill that made them very uneasy to be alone in the stairwells. Even the empty rooms seemed to contain something more than just space.

Before the hospital was constructed, a Native village was discovered to have been in the location from 1450 - 1550. However, it wasn’t natives that the people were seeing. The village stretched from the hospital location to the high school across the street from it.

Now with the hospital closed down, many still hear calls from inside the building, strange lights in the windows to a powerless building, and strange images in the windows. Even the old facility housing complex is thought to be haunted due to doors and windows opening and closing on their own. It is unreported if anyone has investigated the housing complex for anything of the paranormal or strange nature.

The building still stands but remains in horrid condition inside and out. The building was never kept up to possibly ever reopen. Many have ventured inside in hopes of seeing or hearing something. Many just went inside to be alone. Others went in out of curiosity. Yet more than 80% of them all, came out with a strange story to tell about an event of another kind taking place inside.

                One witness report:

"When I was walking outside the building near the old emergency room entrance, I never noticed anything odd. The doors had been boarded up with plywood to keep anyone from entering. Mostly a lot of scattered trash and a few dirty torn cloths were laying in the driveway. I never thought much of it. Just thinking maybe, someone was just littering up the place . . . Then when I started back toward the entrance, I noticed a tiny stream of smoke coming from the driveway. I got closer and realized one of the torn clothes I had just passed was now smoking and burning away. I have no clue as to how it happened. The cloth was nearly burned and I hadn’t even been gone for more than one minute before I headed back. I don’t know how it became lit in the first place.

As I started toward a door with the windows shattered, my 2 brothers and I stood looking in. I randomly yelled out "Is anyone here?" I paused for a few seconds and waited for a response. I tried it again and I heard something answer from the main end of the hallway beyond the lobby "Me." I wasn’t sure of what I heard but my brothers also heard it.

We then decided to enter the hospital and look around without messing with anything. We headed up the stairs toward the old ICU wing. We heard something hit the door with full force before we even touched the handle."

The ICU wing of the hospital was made into a circle shape and the nursing station sitting in the center. Being made this way, the nurses could always keep watch over the patients. The room is now destroyed with beds turned over and a few medical equipment left to rot. The windows were shattered with a few bits of falling ceiling hanging above. Most people entered this room to only leave graffiti as their marking of being brave enough to enter. That was as far as they made it.

"When we pulled the door open, everything seemed normal. Just a few things thrown around the room and a few hospital beds turned over near the walls. The rooms were empty but most of the beds were piled into one room - The room closest to the door. We entered the area and started to look around. It was bright for clear viewing due to the window’s being left open. But at the exit of the ICU ward, there’s a hallway. As I looked down the hallway, it just seemed the darkest of all rooms. We soon spotted something odd laying in the hallway. It appeared to be a human body wrapped in dirty white sheets. We started to get closer to check it out, only to see it slowly shrink down to a sheet laying on the floor.

Yeah, we started to get a little freaked out but we weren’t going to let it bother us."

Just like all hospitals, Man Hospital had many deaths. Some believe the hospital has lingering souls whom remained there to always be with the hospital. Some believe they died from other causes that won’t let them go from the hospital. Or something so disturbing happened to them, their souls can’t rest.

"I turned to look for my brothers to see if they wanted to head down the hallway to check out the patient rooms. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw something that appeared to be a patient standing in a white hospital gown in the room with all the beds piled up. He was standing there holding an IV stand and just staring at us. When I turned to get a better look, it was gone. Just the beds remained and no trace of anyone in the room with us."

Most have seen a few things in the ICU ward from windows outside. Mostly shadows or something that appeared to be someone looking out. Most claim to hear voices from the outside when standing near the building coming from this wing of the hospital.

"As we started toward the hallway, we could hear something like people talking or whispering. I started to notice light come through from under some of the doorways, so I opened a random door. I found a lot of metal bar cribs that held infants whom were admitted into the hospital. A few of them were turned over and a few still standing but turned at an angle toward the door and windows. I closed the door not finding anything much of the interest, and opened the next door. To all of our surprise, there was no possible way for any light to have gotten into that room. A small lamp sits on a desk next to a few turned over beds but the lamp was busted and knocked over. The window’s were blocked with boards, paint, ripped plastic and air conditioners. It seemed colder in that room than normal room temperature. We couldn’t see much in the room but a few files thrown around on the floor."

The hospital, when shut down, was neglectful for it’s files. Most patient files still remain inside its walls along with x-rays and reports. Most have been badly tattered or destroyed from the aging of the building. Most remain buried under the ceiling tiles that had fallen, or dust and dirt. Why this happened, we are unsure. Possibly it could have been left by mistake or simply the files that belonged to those whom died inside the hospital.

"We left the room and shut the door behind us. As we headed down the hallway meeting another hallway, we could see a small trace of light coming from the end of the short hallway. But we couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t shining through enough to show there was light there to begin with. The hallways were completely destroyed with hospital beds blocking some of the paths and wheelchairs along with other random hospital equipment. A few of the room doors were open, letting in little light into the hallway. From what we could see, we saw something move at the end of the hallway. Out of our fear, we never continued. We moved back to the ICU ward and left that section of the hospital. But in the stairwell, we found a strange looking machine that had just been thrown there. We can’t recall even passing it on our way up. But we continued to the bottom of the stairwell."

The stairway mentioned in the above witness report, is part of the hospital that is found in the front, near the main entrance. That small stairwell also leads to a storage room behind the stairwell where a strange photography of a cake was found on the floor next to a few tattered and slightly burned magazines. The photo was from an old Polaroid camera. Though it was weathered, the picture was still clear of what it was taken of. Close to where the photo was found, is the other door leading to the main lobby of the hospital. The lobby always contained a gift shop and registration desks. The windows for the gift shop were broken and nothing remained inside but a few bits of trash. This lobby is where many rested while they waited in the hospital.

"I looked into the large wooden door that lead into the lobby. The glass in the top center was busted out so a faint smell of dust and mildew filled the inside air. We opened the door and walked inside but we all had this chill that we were being watched or something was going to happen. As we started to look around at the hospital we once knew, we found a few more files laying in the floor along with some x-rays. A strange red light on a wall-hanging box near the registration area was flashing. We couldn’t figure out why or how seeing that the power had been cut off for years and the wires ripped out the bottom. We continued to look around heading back into the small clinic area they had placed in the front before the hospital closed. We found, yet again, more files laying on the floor with a few phones and desks throw around. A large hole had been busted out in one of the walls. The rooms were well lit and allowed us to look around clearly.

In one of the small rooms, we opened the door to find a mop and broom still sitting inside. It was almost odd because of the damage and destruction to the rest of the place. But we shrugged it off and moved on thinking the vandals just weren’t interested in bothering something that was used for cleaning.

We left that small area and started to look around. In the very long and dark hallway leading to the emergency room, a hallway and the waiting room, we saw a lot of medical stuff turned over and blocking the way. It seemed like it was just stacked perfectly for no one to enter, but we saw a clearing. Without a flashlight, we didn’t continue. There was no source of light in that area and we found it too dangerous to continue. So we headed back towards the other hallway that connect to the waiting room hallway in the back.

As we went further, we started to smell something awful. It wasn’t the smell of anything we could recognize. It was like the smell of something dead with chemicals mixed in. We were in the hallway below the morgue, but the strange thing that hit us all, is why would the hospital leave behind chemicals that’s used in a morgue?"

The hallway also contained: elevators, a cafeteria, snack room, locker rooms, blood laboratory, storage, a 3rd stairwell, and the morgue on the right end behind large doors which were reported to be ripped down. The hallway contains many things broken and laying in the floor such as: hospital equipment, chairs, ceiling tile, broken and fallen wires, and a few doors that were ripped from the hinges.

This is the same hallway that many have reported seeing strange figures leaving the morgue late at night. Mostly things that didn’t quite seem alive any more or of a paranormal nature. Sounds were also heard loudly in this hallway even when no one else was around.

As a child, I witnessed on accident, a body being rolled from the emergency room to the morgue. Apparently they over looked me when they were making sure no one was there in the waiting area. The nurses didn’t seem to notice me and rush away but acted casual about the whole ordeal.

"As we struggled to get toward the elevator section near the other hallway leading to the ER waiting room, it became too dark to continue and the sound of voices seemed to get louder. We couldn’t understand what they were saying but it sounded like they were getting closer to us instead of we getting closer to them. Out of panic, my brother takes out a small lighter with a tiny light on the bottom to look around. We could see the door to the x-ray waiting room and ripped down x-ray doors. The elevators were still standing but the doors had been pried open. I noticed the strange smell kept getting stronger so I demanded we leave that area.

My brother was leading with my other brother in front of me. I was holding to my brother leather jacket while he leads me. But I noticed the sound of them talking was getting lower and lower. . . It was like they were fading out. I started to panic a bit in the dark because I couldn’t see anything in front of me. Barely seeing a small glimpse of the dim light, I felt reassured but I was still scared. Very soon, I noticed the feel of my brothers leather jacket seemed to have a cloth like techier. And I realized that I’m being lead toward the morgue. When I looked to the right side, I saw my brothers going the other direction and quickly let go of whatever I was following. I quickly rushed to them and didn’t look back. . .

I kept getting a bit more frightened though I was relieved to see it was them this time. My brothers didn’t seem to believe what I was telling them about what just happened due to their own curiosity of the strange lights that still remained on. We were now back in the light from the windows but I still didn’t feel safe. After a few more minutes, they were ready to leave feeling they had found all they could find."

Many people have entered the hospital to this day with flashlights or camera’s hoping to catch something they’ll never forget. Most leave disappointed but the rest leave never wanting to go back. Maybe it’s the dark that holds whatever is inside. Or maybe it’s something else holding those spirits inside that hospital. . .

The following report happened at a later date than the one above.

"It was me and my friend who wanted to go in. I told her what happened to me before when I was inside with my brothers and she kept edging me to go with her so she wouldn’t go alone. Finally, I agreed. My brother came with us and on our way to the hospital through the worn down parking lot, we heard something like doors slamming from the faculty housing building. We looked over to notice a curtain in a broken window moving but there was no wind. My friend found this fascinating and wanted to see more. So we continued to the hospital. We went in through the front first but nothing felt the same as before. It felt like things had calmed down a lot.

So she looked around and found some files laying on the ground which she looked over. She wanted to go through the hallway my brothers and I had already gone through. I refused to go and told her I couldn’t stand the smell. So we walked upstairs and looked around in the ICU ward. The machine though, in the stairwell, had been replaced with a turned over chair and a few chairs sitting at the top. Inside, we found a medical kit laying on the nursing station desk. It had been opened and a few file drawers pried open.

We found a few old stickers that use to be used to mark patients files and their beds. Nothing was out of the ordinary and nothing seemed to be happening anymore. Everything was quiet and we could hear the birds out the broken windows. The sheet was still in the hallway though, and a few doors were open - nothing strange or special about it.

So, with her feeling a bit disappointed, we headed back downstairs. My brother had the idea of trying the back door that leads into the x-ray department. So we walked around back and the door was standing open. It was dark inside and I suddenly had the cold chill again from seeing the mass darkness inside. But I was finding myself eager to go back in and maybe find something new. As we entered and went down the short flight of stairs, we noticed a lot of x-rays laying around on the floor along with files and boxes. My guess was vandals again so we moved on into the hallway of the x-ray section.

The first thing that caught my eye was something moving but I couldn’t figure out what it was for sure. It was at the end of the hallway and in complete darkness with small light shining through. I passed it off as a breeze from broken windows. So, we started out adventure of looking around out of curiosity."

The hospital also neglected removing a lot of their own x-ray machines that were left in that ward. Most were destroyed and some were removed after a short while. The x-ray department was found near the back of the hospital, behind the emergency section. The other exit to that wing, was towards the elevators in the back hallway. The x-ray department had their own large waiting room near the elevators for persons to wait on x-rays. It never seemed to be full but always seemed to only contain a few people. Or sometimes, just one waiting on an x-ray technician to have a room ready and waiting.

"After a brief while, I noticed the thing moving again. This time, I realized it was sitting on a hospital bed that had been wheeled out into the hallway with clutter behind it. I could make it out more clearly as I moved around and a bit closer. It appeared to be a person rocking back and forth on the end of the bed. I quickly backed away and nearer the light. My friend and brother also saw it. My friend yelled out "Hello?" But there was no answer. It just continued to rock at the same pace as if it were waiting impatiently or mentally disturbed. After watching it for awhile, it just seemed to fade to darkness and we couldn’t see it anymore. My friend wanted to find a light to go find out if someone was messing with us. But we couldn’t find a flashlight or any light source. We headed back to the small set of stairs and walked back up toward the back door.

My friend remained curious of what else the hospital had to offer. She was hoping to find a nursery or a maternity ward. I explained to her that neither was placed in the hospital and all babies were delivered somewhere else. But she refused to believe it due to the metal frame baby beds upstairs in the patient rooms. We knew she was determined to prove us wrong but we both knew she wasn’t going to find one. We had lived near that hospital for years and had even been admitted to its rooms."

The back stairwell from the x-ray department lead outside and upstairs to the 2nd floor patient rooms. ICU is also found on the 2nd floor. Patients weren’t allowed to use those stairwells but were required to use the front stairwell or the elevators.

"My brother never went with us this time. It was just me and my friend. We started up the stairs and found a lot of scattered files and torn sheets. Like the other stairwell, it too contained a lot of medical equipment but mostly chairs and bed mattresses and frames scattered about. We had enough walking space to make it to the top without running into a blocked path though. After we reached the top, she opened the door and lead us inside. The hallway seemed brighter than ever. It was clear to see everything. Trash lay in the hallway with medical beds, wheelchairs, files, wires, ceiling tile, doors, broken glass and a few desks. It smelled of mildew and dust. But everything seemed normal enough and nothing compared to the day my brothers and I entered. It was like a whole new building. . .

But just as we were starting to think things were possibly different, we saw a light under a door. My friend opened the door and found the windows blocked completely. It had been a small office with a lot of file cabinets and the windows blocked with paint and plastic. The cabinets were turned over, dented badly, and covered in rust. I noticed a small stream of light coming through the crack in the plastic and thought it could be just that light we saw. So we moved on to the next areas.

We found hospital beds packed into one of the rooms and side tables turned over, mostly. As we continued to look, to my surprise, we did find something really strange. We found a babys car-seat sitting in the middle of the hallway. We were nearing the ICU ward when we found it. But it was never there before, nor did we notice it when we first looked over the hallway. My friend, again, was fascinated and instead of finding it odd, she found it cute. But that feeling quietly faded when we heard a loud crash and thump noise from behind the door we were standing close to.

She opened the door and found nothing out of the ordinary. Everything was the same as the other rooms. Just turned over medical equipment. Then we heard it again but louder and from another room with the door open. It was the door we saw the light coming from under. It sounded like the air conditioner in the window was trying to kick on. We were standing completely still and silent listening to the strange noise. It wasn’t until it stopped that we noticed the sound of birds had completely disappeared and silence was taking its place. As we stood there, it made one last thumping noise as a cold breeze blew over us.

Never thinking much of cold breezes due to all the broken windows, I looked around the hallway to make sure we were still alone. My friend kept watching in the room then slowly started looking around with me. Still, the air remained silent til we heard something like faint whispering and muffled baby crying in the far distance. Me and my friend were almost tempted to go find it, fearing someone had left their infant child inside the place. But just like the sound of the birds, it stopped and everything remained dead silent again. As we moved around a bit starting to shake the feeling, we continued to search but my friend noticed the baby seat was slightly rocking. I thought it was just a joke that maybe she pushed it and made it rock in an attempt to scare me.

Out of nowhere, we hear the sound of something moving at the end of the hallway with voices whispering and the baby crying again. It lasted for just a brief moment before complete silence again. My friend urged me to go find the source of the sound. So, we both started toward the dark hoping we could open a door and have light again. But before we even made it that far, a wheelchair in the hallway started moving on its own. It began to roll toward us slowly, like someone was pushing it. We backed away and headed back towards the window with all the light. Again, we noticed we were in complete silence but we could hear birds again. My friend had finally decided she saw enough and was ready to leave. As we started down the stairs, I could hear something like faint footsteps but I couldn’t tell which way they were going."

The staff of the old hospital use to claim to hear strange cries or see things move slightly on their own. Most would claim to hear or see doors opening and shutting on their own or beds moving. Some even claimed to have seen people or patients that just simply disappeared. The hospital was always a lonely place at night. Never seeming to be full of patients and always having busy staff making sure the patients were comfortable. But never seeming to find that comfort in their own jobs.

"After we got back to the bottom of the stairs, we started toward the parking lot and witnessed a door on the faculty housing open and slam shut all on its own. My friend became interested in searching those places, but they were too badly wrecked. So the most searching she did, was looking through the broken windows only to find nothing inside but trash."

The hospital stands today as an area that very few know of as a haunted area. Most don’t even know of the hospital. Either way it goes, the hospital stands in Man, West Virginia as a grim sight that use to be a community hospital. Now with the hospital in decay, the community is required to travel further to get the medical attention they once had in their own small town. Though the locals may have to travel to another hospital, the residents whom took up homestead in the hospital, remain there today.

Recent news has let us all know the hospital is being torn down and replaced with a new hospital from a company in Charleston, West Virgnia. Though they're taring down the old wings of the hospital, they plan to leave the ER standing to add to the new construction. Maybe they'll be adding more than they think.
